Cornerstone Value Stock Screener | Stock selection 14 July 2009
Cornerstone Value Stock Screener is based on James O'Shaughnessy's book What Works on Wall Street: A Guide to the best-performing Investment Strategies of All Time, a 1996 bestseller. The seminal book influenced professional and amateur investors alike to take notice and rethink their investment strategies in the light of 44 years of back-tested stock market data from the comprehensive Standard & Poor's Compustat database. The book provides a detailed examination of basic investment strategies, by revealing the test results of a number of value and growth screens on the S&P Compustat database covering a 40 year period. He goes on to show which criterias within each strategy produced the best returns. The strategies require portfolio rebalancing on an annual basis.

Based on his research, O'Shaughnessy developed two key investment strategies: "Cornerstone Growth" and "Cornerstone Value." Cornerstone Value looks for large companies with strong sales and cash flows, and from those that meet that profile (as per four relevant criteria) it selects those with the highest dividend yield. It is appropriate for investors looking at stocks that provide steady income, with a measure of safety.
When looking at the results, it is useful to keep in mind that there are no miracle screens that produce lists of guaranteed winners. A well-designed one however, would provide us with a shortlist of stocks that hold some promise.Remember that even the best designed screen is only a preliminary search for investments using a small set of quantitative factors. A complete in-depth analysis of shortlisted stocks that explores both quantitative and qualitative factors should follow any screen.
